The Ramayana: A Modern Retelling of the Great Indian Epic
Published in Hardcover by North Point Press (May, 2003)
Author: Ramesh Menon
Average review score:

Beautifully written and spiritually profound
The Ramayana is one of the most important pieces of literature ever written, yet it is not commonly read in this country. Here's your chance to do something about it. This version retains all the depth and beauty of the original, yet it is an accessible and compelling read. The path of Rama and his wife Sita is so inspiring in this day and age because of its emphasis on moral virtue. We could all use a dose of that.

Saltwater Angler's Guide to the Southeast: Flyfishing and Light Tackle in the Carolinas and Georgia (Saltwater Angler's Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Adventures Press (01 September, 1999)
Author: Bob Newman
Average review score:

Flyfishing in Saltwaters Magazine
On the subject of guidebooks, here's one that's tough to beat. Bob Newman has divided North America's Southeast Coast into a series of discrete areas, like images on a strip of film, and then tells what you need to know to fish each area. Excellent maps will help you find your way. If it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then these maps must be worth 10,000 words each. Newman also provides lists of accommodations, restaurants, fly and tackle shops, marinas, guides and other services. After dissecting North Carolina, he does the same for South Carolina and Georgia, describing the fishing in similar detail for each state. Then comes Offshore Action, a chapter on "green-water" and "blue-water" species, including tackle requirements and tactics, and another chapter on trip planning, with tips on how to arrange hotel, air or rental car reservations and how to choose a guide. Newman writes in a straightforward, breezy style and tosses in just enough anecdotes to keep things lively. As the subtitle indicates, this guide covers "light-tackle" as well as fly fishing, but the emphasis seems more on the latter. A good index helps make the book user-friendly. Kudos to Newman for a thoroughly written and professional job. With this book in hand you'll run like a train, jump like a tarpon, charge for your boat, swear to catch fish, and pull out your fly rod-Yowza! Steve Raymond

The Security Dilemmas of Southeast Asia

Author: Alan Collins

Excellent, up to date summary
Small book, which leads to fast reading and wide coverage. If entirely new to SEA, provides a quick study on their major concerns. If an old "China" hand, then a good source for references and summary information.

The Shaping of Malaysia (Studies in the Economies of East and South-East Asia)
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (June, 1999)
Authors: Amarjit Kaur and Ian Metcalfe
Average review score:

Excellent Primer on Malaysia
This book provides a systematic description and analysis of the factors that shaped Malaysia, bringing together studies on the country's geological origins and mineral resources, flora, fauna, peoples and cultures, political change, economy and society, environment and eco-tourism. It explicates Malaysia's current economic and political development by considering it in the light of these natural and human resources. Besides taking a comparative view of such changes in Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, it highlights Malaysia's incorporation into the wider global economy.

Offering an integrated perspective on Malaysia by focusing on its natural and human resource endowments, it also goes on to explore how they have changed over time. This book makes an important contribution to a greater understanding of present-day Malaysia by providing the background to essential elements in the evolution of the country's modern economy and society.

A collection of papers from those presented at a colloquium on 'Research on Malaysia-Recent Advances' at the University of New England, Australia on October 1995, this book is therefore not exhaustive and some issues are dealt with more fully than others. For example, the chapter on fauna is devoted mostly to the orang utan, neglecting other endangered species such as the Sumatran rhinoceros and tiger.

Formerly associate professor in the History Department of the University of Malaya, Amarjit Kaur is now associate professor and head of the Department of Economic History at the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia. Formerly lecturer and senior lecturer in the Geology Departments of the University of Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Ian Metcalfe is currently associate professor in the Division of Earth Sciences, School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, University of New England.

Southeast Asian Urbanism
Published in Paperback by Lit Verlag ()
Author: Evers
Average review score:

New Insight on Urbanism
Southeast Asian Urbanism is based on the results of over two decades of field research on cities and towns of Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. The connections between micro and macro processes, between grassroots interactions and urban structures, between social theory and empirical data are analysed to provide a vivid picture of the great variety of urban forms, the social creativity in the slums of Bangkok, Manila or Jakarta, the variety of cultural symbolism and the political and religious structuration of urban space.

The book is written in the tradition of German or European sociological research from Marx and Weber to Habermas and Bourdieu. The work on Southeast Asian urbanism was carried out within the research programme of the Sociology of Development Research Centre of the University of Bielefeld in Germany, but also during teaching and research assignments at Chulalongkorn University, the National University of Singapore, the Science University of Malaysia, the National University of Malaysia, Andalas University, Padang, the Population Studies Centre at Gadjah Mada University, the University of Indonesia, the University of the Philippines and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore.

The book will be of interest to urban anthropologists, political scientists and sociologists, to students of Southeast Asian history, culture and society, to urban planners and policy makers.

Thai for Advanced Readers
Published in Paperback by Paiboon Publishing (10 May, 2000)
Author: Benjawan Becker
Average review score:

A very helpful book
This is a very good book to help you practice the critical Thai language skill of READING. You need a lot of practice in this because the words are all run together in Thai sentences, and so you need a lot of practice in "chunking" the words out of the long sequence of letters, and you also need practice in word recognition and pronunciation. (Those tone rules need a lot of practice!) I wouldn't pay too much credit to the idea that Thai is written with a phonetic alphabet. Of course, it IS, but there are lots of irregular words, and the big difficulty is this: if you can read a word, you can generally pronounce it. But the reverse does not work: knowing how to say a word does NOT tell you how to spell it, not when there are three S letters, and multiple choices for th, t, p, ph, etc., not to mention umpteen ways to write a final t. (A final t can be an s or a th or t or d or.....) Frankly, if you're learning Thai you will probably wind up with all the books from Paiboon Publishing. They are very useful! Highest recommendation!

White Christmas in April: The Collapse of South Vietnam, 1975
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (November, 1999)
Authors: J. Edward Lee and Toby Haynsworth
Average review score:

The untold story
This is an in-depth look at the days leading up to the evacuation of Vietnam, by my Father who was there on the USS Midway. Learn about the heroism and tragedy of this dark period of American history. My favorite story is about the Vietnamese Air Force pilot who flew his entire family out in a 2 man Piper Cub.

What makes this book fascinating is the different philosophies of the 2 authors. Toby was the son of a Navy admiral, who would serve his country for 20 years. Ed is an ex-Vietnam war protester with a doctorate in history. Toby has his doctorate in management science. What makes this book work is Ed's devotion to historical accuracy and Toby's extensive connections within the military community.
